We spotted the Stiletto desk at Decorex, and asked Matt and Miles to come to our offices to discuss some potential projects. Within a couple of days we had sketches of a boardroom table and desk. What set them apart from other designers I have worked with is that, whilst they contributed many ideas, they really listened to what I wanted. Each time they were designing something completely new and seemed to thrive on the challenge of making something on the edge of physical impossibility!
I really enjoyed getting involved with the design process, and as such have commissioned several more pieces. Having previously put many interiors together myself, to have someone be able to sketch up ideas in front of me was a godsend. From the desks we now plan for Splinter Works to get involved in the full layout of another office, to make sure everything sits comfortably.
We are currently having fun designing a cocktail cabinet for our living room. I wanted something that was a nod to the art deco surroundings but still very modern. The timbers they have chosen have just a hint of the deco and the dark legs reference the floor tones, they have a great eye for colour.
When the first two pieces were delivered I was very nervous taking on two big pieces, as I normally don't enjoy commissioning furniture as you never know 100% what is going to be delivered, but when they arrived I got quite emotional, I think I even shed a tear!
We get a great pleasure seeing young enthusiastic people working, they are a good team, organised with great attention to detail. They are passionate and have proven their skills and delivered us fantastic pieces. We have been very happy with the whole experience.

We commissioned Splinter Works to replace a breakfast cabinet, which needed to separate making drinks and breakfast from the kitchen. As they looked at the space our needs became clearer and we realised we wanted to watch TV in the adjacent room. We had never even considered that these two requirements, in two different spaces, could be accomplished with a single piece. The way they combined these functions was miraculous.
The design process was fascinating and enjoyable. They proposed several concepts, which were all quite different, and then we discussed each one, amalgamating ideas along the way and creating a more sophisticated design with each edit. They understood our needs before we did and translated them into something practical and beautiful.
They took our two problems and solved it with one piece of furniture that was multi-functional, creative and so enjoyable to use. So much thought went into the design, there really was very little that hadn’t been contemplated. They are very experienced at the whole process, which gave us the confidence to commit to the design, now we don’t know how we functioned without it.

Splinter Works first supplied the kitchen in our Hampshire cottage where we wanted a sociable space with dining and cooking all together. Their portfolio was quite cutting edge but we needed it to work in the cottage surroundings. They accomplished this with some modern ideas in a traditional aesthetic, such as placing the Aga in the centre of the room on the island, which although seemed bizarre at first, seems simple now, because it works so brilliantly.
Miles and Matt are very approachable and I was welcomed into the design process. Being so involved was enjoyable and meant I got something that really works because we spent the time getting everything right. When you work with creative people sometimes you feel your ideas are not heard but this wasn’t the case with Splinter Works – I felt that my contributions were valued.
We keep coming back to them! Since doing our kitchen they have gone on to create two beautiful TV cabinets, and have recently finished our tricky master suite. Because of the eves it was a really hard space to deign and after several years without direction it was refreshing to have Splinter Works offer up such creative and pragmatic solutions.
The different projects have all run to schedule, and when unforeseeable circumstances did make the kitchen run slightly over, we were all informed about it, so that it wasn’t an issue. They remained conscientious with regards to the budget throughout the build, which gave us peace of mind.
We have learnt that it is all about space, and without an objective eye and practical design solutions, even the most beautiful design won’t work. But now we have both!
